Shanghai World Expo Suspends Theme Song, Accused of Plagiarism
April 22nd 2010 04:44
The 2010 World Expo in Shanghai is not getting off to a good start. Its theme song seems to have been plagiarized from the 1997 Japanese hit “Sono Mama no Kimi de Ite” by female pop singer Mayo Okamoto.
In response to the plagiarism allegations, the Expo organizers have stopped using the theme song for now, while the issue is being sorted out.
Meanwhile, blogs and websites are abuzz with the issue, with Chinese and Japanese trading online barbs. On one website—chinasmak.com—videos of the two songs are posted side-by-side so that netizens can judge for themselves.
Ms. Okamoto has declined to comment, but it’s reported she will soon be taking a formal stance on the issue on her website.
