Canadian counterspy agency reveals China influence in Canada

On June 22, in an interview with the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation (CBC), the director of the Canadian Security Intelligence Service (CSIS), Richard Fadden, disclosed that some municipal and provincial level government officials in Canada are under influence from foreign governments. He specifically named Communist China.
Fadden pointed out that cabinet ministers in at least two provinces are under the control of foreign governments. The officials in several cities in the province of Quebec are also under investigation.
Fadden mentioned that half of the CSIS annual budget is spent on counter-intelligence operations against spies from China. At least five countries are secretly recruiting political talents from Canadian universities. Among them, China is the most active. The recruiting is directly controlled by the Chinese Embassy and Consulates through funding of university student clubs. The Chinese government is also involved in the protests against Canadian policies regarding China.
The director of the Toronto Supporters for Democracy in China, Zhuozhong Guan, said that ever since the Tiananmen Square incident on June 4, 1989, the Chinese government clearly strengthened their “war on all fronts” against foreign governments and overseas Chinese communities. In Canada, the Communist regime uses all kinds of methods to persuade officials and local Chinese to speak fondly of them, plus assist in extending the persecution against overseas democratic supporters and Falun Gong members.
Guan said that the Chinese government achieves their goals through individuals and groups in the local Chinese community. He personally knew the people who act on behalf of the Chinese government, and also knew those politicians who have close ties to the Communists and always speak profoundly of them. Guan also acknowledged that he knew that some provincial level officials have done some deeds unsuitable for their identities.
Guan expressed that recently China invited Toronto mayoral candidate Zhenmin Shi to visit the country free of charge. This was a clear example of China trying to influence Canadian politics. He feels that by exposing these issues, the CSIS is warning politicians and government officials about the dangers of China’s “war on all fronts” schemes.
